Open Access Network

What is Open Access Internet?

Open access is a network model in which the infrastructure owner and controller (Damexplore) makes its fibre network available to multiple service providers simultaneously. Rather than one ISP owning the cables and choosing who gets served and at what price, the infrastructure is wholesale and shared.

This model has transformed internet access in markets across South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States — reducing the cost of last-mile connectivity, increasing competition, and dramatically improving service quality for end users. Nigeria is now poised to benefit from the same model.

For Lagos specifically, open access fibre addresses several longstanding challenges:

  • High cost of last-mile deployment — partners share infrastructure costs rather than each building their own parallel network
  • Limited ISP competition — multiple ISPs can serve the same street or building, driving down prices and improving service
  • Unreliable connectivity — a managed fibre backbone delivers consistent, low-latency speeds compared to fixed wireless or copper alternatives
  • Underserved communities — a shared infrastructure model makes it economically viable to extend fibre to areas that a single ISP could not justify serving alone
